Why do men experience hair loss?

Men are more prone to baldness, especially male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia), due to genetic and hormonal factors.

Genetics
If you have a family history of baldness, you’re more likely to experience it. Specific genes influence hair follicle sensitivity to hormones, particularly dihydrotestosterone (DHT).

Hormones
Testosterone converts to DHT, which binds to hair follicles, causing them to shrink and produce thinner, shorter hair. Over time, follicles may stop producing visible hair.

Age
Male pattern baldness becomes more pronounced with age due to increased exposure to DHT, leading to more hair thinning and loss.

Variation and Treatment
Not all men experience baldness to the same extent, and onset and progression can vary. While genetic and hormonal factors are hard to control, treatments are available to slow progression and promote hair growth.

Why do women experience hair loss?

Women can experience hair loss due to hormonal imbalances, genetics, medical conditions, and lifestyle factors.

Genetics
Genetics play a role in female pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia). A family history of hair loss increases the likelihood.

Hormonal Changes
Hormonal fluctuations from menopause, PCOS, and imbalances can increase androgen levels, causing hair thinning and loss.

Pregnancy and Childbirth
Hormonal changes during pregnancy can cause hair shedding.

Medical Conditions
Thyroid disorders, autoimmune diseases (like alopecia areata), cancer, and certain skin conditions can lead to hair loss.

Stress and Lifestyle
Physical and emotional stress, as well as certain hairstyling practices (tight ponytails, braids, harsh chemicals), can damage hair follicles and cause hair loss.
